Repair Or Replace: What To Do With Your Garage Door
Posted on: 14 September 2020
Making the decision to replace something like your garage door can be a daunting task. Though it's not very expensive to replace (at least relative to other parts of your house), it still involves a lot of time to research the new door and make sure it's operating normally.
But before you pick up the phone and schedule a replacement, consider whether or not it can be simply repaired first. You may save yourself unnecessary stress by simply hiring a company that works on garage doors to simply make a few adjustments and extend the life of your door by several more years.
Is It Damaged?
There are two types of damage that can happen to your garage door: structural or cosmetic. Structural damage happens when the door itself is cracked or disfigured in some way resulting in a loss of functionality, whether that's failure to even open or close or when there's a gaping hole or crack in the door itself. In these scenarios, the cost of repairing it may be almost as much as simply replacing the door entirely, but it's best to check with a company that handles garage door repairs to see what they recommend.
Cosmetic damage is when the paint is damaged somehow or one of the decorative pieces has come off. These types of issues are much easier to repair and can be solved relatively inexpensively, so repairing it would be a much better option than a full garage door replacement.
How Old Is It?
With proper maintenance, garage doors can last an almost unlimited amount of time. Typically though, you can expect yours to last anywhere from 15-30 years, so if your door is approaching the top end of that spectrum, it's worth looking at garage door replacement no matter what type of damage is done. If you make the decision to simply do garage door repairs though, make sure you take care of your door by spraying lubricant, cleaning the surface, and having regular maintenance performed.
Do You Want to Upgrade?
Sometimes, even if the repair is minor, you still may want to install a new door for other reasons. Like everything else, garage doors are constantly evolving and adapting to modern technology that can bring with it a whole host of advantages. Energy-saving features, added insulation for soundproofing, different designs — these are just a few of the things that you can install should you choose to go with a garage door replacement.
