How To Maintain Your Home's Garage Door

Posted on: 21 April 2023

Your garage door likely gets used every single day, which puts a lot of wear and tear on the moving parts. That's why you need to take the necessary steps to maintain the garage door and keep it working for as long as possible. Here are a few tips for performing garage door maintenance.

Lubricate The Moving Parts

A garage door has many moving parts that require lubrication to keep them moving smoothly. If they don't have lubrication, the parts will wear down prematurely and make a lot of noise. You'll want to use a silicone-based lubricant to reduce the friction that is created with parts like the rollers and hinges. You'll want to avoid using any lubricant that is petroleum-based since it can actually cause dirt to stick to the lubricant and cause more problems.

Tighten Loose Hardware

There are plenty of bolts that are used to hold your garage door together, and they can become loose over time. You'll want to check those bolts periodically to make sure that they are tight and are not becoming loose. Those loose bolts are going to cause parts to become damaged prematurely as they move in ways they are not intended to. All you need is a socket wrench to tighten the loose bolts. Just make sure that you don't over-tighten anything to the point where it causes damage.

Check The Garage Door's Balance

Your garage door should be balanced so that it stays in place on its own. This can easily be tested by disconnecting the garage door from the opener and trying to move it up and down. A garage door that is balanced will remain in any position that you leave it in, even if the garage door is partially opened. If the door is falling down, then you likely have a problem with the springs that need to be replaced. It's a good idea to do this sooner rather than later to prevent more damage.

Inspect The Weatherstripping

Your garage door has weather stripping around it that helps prevent drafts and pests from getting into your garage. It's possible for the weatherstripping to be damaged over time and require replacement. Thankfully, this is a part that is easy to replace on your own. There are even weatherstrips that are designed to keep pests out by being made out of a tough material that they cannot chew through.

Finding The Perfect Garage Door

After I moved into our new home, I realized that there were a few issues with the exterior of the house. It seemed like the home was older, even though it was built a few years ago. One of the things that stuck out to me was the condition of the garage door, so I started thinking about ways to rectify the problem. I was able to find a company that built custom garage doors, and they were amazing to work with. Within a few days, my new garage door was built and installed, and I was really pleased with the outcome. Check out this blog for more information on garage doors.
